Anyone who has at least once taken the contraceptive pill is inevitably aware that it should not be forgotten one day because otherwise it has no effect! But likely you too have been in a hurry to leave your home one day, either in your car or in your office, and you have not had a drink that day. The contraceptive pill is the most popular form of contraception in the United Kingdom and the world! According to statistics, nine out of ten women have taken it. But a missing pill breaks down the entire order of defense and increases the risk of pregnancy, in addition to possible side effects such as bleeding or irregular periods!
This week, researchers at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Institute of Technology have published their preliminary findings on a new kind of contraceptive pill, published in Science of Translational Medicine magazine. The main difference? It should only be taken once a month.
Research, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, used a star - shaped drug delivery system that releases a steady flow of contraceptive hormones throughout the month. The pill is large and is able to pass through the stomach as normal food, and it stays there for three weeks until it releases all hormones.
While it is still about results, all of this marks a monument shift in contraception options, providing women with more choices than ever before.
