Russia is the world's largest natural gas exporter, while China is the second largest economy.
“Today is a landmark event, a truly historic event not only for the global energy market, but, first of all, for you and for us, for Russia and China”, said the Russian President Vadimir Putin, through a television connection, where Chinese leader Xi Jinping also appeared.
“Brenda 30 years, more than a trillion cubic metres of gas will be sent to China via the Siberian Power pipeline”, Putin said. The “pipeline served as a model of constructive co-operation between our countries”, Xi said on the other side.
The Siberian Power pipeline is seen as part of Moscow's efforts to ease the effects of financial sanctions, which it has imposed on the West because of its actions in Ukraine.
Putin said that trade with China will reach a $100 billion record this year, up from $88 billion in 2018. Russia has two other pipeline projects to increase gas supplies to Europe but will bypass Ukraine. / REL
