The European Union is at the head of Albania's recovery efforts after the devastating earthquake, writes the New York Times.
The European Union and the United Nations are co-ordinating international efforts in aid to the country's knees in natural disaster, the article says, stressing how a European bloc team is leading the assessment and distribution of aid.
Six member states have sent 50 structural engineers, and others are expected to arrive to assess the damage along with local counterparts. The United States Agency for International Development has also sent structural engineers from the Fairfax and Los Angeles Fire Departments to help with the process.
The New York Times highlights, among other things, the fact that prosecutors have launched an investigation into possible illegal construction and violation of construction regulations. According to the prestigious daily, the very poor construction is the violation of building codes, and corruption is listed among the main reasons for the major damage caused by this earthquake.
Albania's government, the document continues, has called on the international community for financial assistance and expert assistance, saying it is incapable of doing so alone. On Thursday, the new European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenzic, who took office Monday, is expected to visit Tirana to talk about reconstruction plans. /tch
