France, a former colonising power, is the only Western country to have considerable military presence in the mountain, where operations are under way against the rebels.
The French Army commander has confirmed that he killed 33 militants in the operation, reportedly conducted overnight, 150km from the Mauritan border in the mountain town of Mopti.
