No sign of the border line between Kosovo and Serbia has often created panic situations between the Serbian gendarmerie and residents of border villages. The village of Karacheva of Kamenica municipality now has this problem and residents of this village feel threatened by the introduction of Serbian gendarmerie on their territory.
Currently, KFOR's peacekeeping forces have placed within this village a sign warning the movement only of KFOR and UNMIK. The Express newspaper has contacted KFOR's peacekeeping mission regarding the deployment of this sign. They have declared that the sign is determined with the aim of implementing the Kumanovo Military Technical Agreement and poses no danger to residents.
In accordance with Resolution 1244 and the Kumanovo Military Technical Agreement in Kosovo are international security forces established, KFOR, with missions to control and monitor Kosovo's borders. In accordance with this agreement, security areas, airspace and security zones and land and security areas are also scheduled.
Residents of the village of Karachev, which lies in the border belt between Kosovo and Serbia, have seen with concern the deployment of signs by KFOR.
In response to Express, KFOR has declared that these signs are set in order to implement the 1999 Military Technical Agreement.
“The stations are located along the Administrative Border Line, not only in Karace, and are reference points for KFOR, set for military purposes aimed at implementing the Military Technical Agreement”, it says in response.
On the other hand, KFOR's peacekeeping mission has said the signs are being replaced because of their damage to weather conditions.
“KFOR has begun to replace existing signs, because they are in very poor condition because of exposure to weather damage. This is a regular activity that has been done in the past and has nothing to do with anything else”, they said.
For establishing these signs, KFOR has said it does not affect the lives of Karatcheva residents and that their mission will ensure a safe environment for all communities in Kosovo.
The phases along the Administrative Border Line do not affect the lives and activities of Kosovo residents. KFOR continues to carry out its mandate to ensure freedom of movement and secure environment for all communities in Kosovo, under the mandate granted by the United Nations”, KFOR is said to respond.
The introduction of the Serbian gendarmerie has been frequent in villages along the Kosovo-Serbia border belt.
The latest case of the introduction of the Serbian gendarmerie was in the border village of Sulbica in Gjilan, where residents of this village had complained that masked soldiers of Serbian gendarmerie freely patrolled within the village.
