According to Apple Intimacy Policy, the phone will periodically submit its location with the geo-ethicting labels of hot spots and nearby Wi-Fi towers, anonymous and encrypted. Apple, however, stresses that this can be systematically deactivated for any single app.
However, video evidence published by security researcher Brian Krebs shows that even if the option is “shut down” for each app and then disables data admission, the GPS still informs the mysterious server that it is available online.
In a statement, Apple engineers said they didn't see any specific security risks in this.
