Karimov was born on 21 December 1986 in Saran (Kazakistan), but grew up a football player at Wolfsburg. He joined the German club at the age of 14, and went through youth teams until he even played with the first team. It was part of the <x0).
In 2009, he celebrated the first championship with Wolfsburg under coach Felix Magath.
