Some tourists were seen walking through the crater of the island volcano just moments before the explosion.
Police said 23 people have been rescued, but have warned that conditions were hampering the operation. To help the police, the New Zealand Army has also emerged.
Volcanus on the White Island is one of the most active in New Zealand.
On December 3rd, the site of geohazard monitoring GeoNet warned that “volcanans may be entering a period when explosive activity is most likely to occur”, though it added that the current “state of activity does not pose direct danger to visitors”.
