Daimler's chief of staff, Wilfried Port, told reporters that the number of lost jobs would be “with five numbers”.
The announcement comes days after the rival manufacturer, Audi, said it would close 9,500 of the 61,000 jobs it has in Germany for similar reasons.
Daimler said the car industry “is going through the biggest transformation in history”.
“A part of this programme is reducing staff costs for about 1.4 billion euros by the end of 2022 and reducing the number of management positions worldwide by 10 percent”, the company said.
