Kosovo citizens own over 47 thousand cars that are not registered or secured, and they circulate through the country's streets and sometimes even cause accidents.
From the Interior Affairs Ministry's data provided for the FactePlus News Agency, it appears that there are exactly 47 thousand 48 unregistered cars, which have been identified since 2010.
But this number is not being seen as real by the Kosovo Insurance Association, which considers that the number of unregistered cars is much larger.
The director of this association, Sami Mazrek, has said there are at least 110 thousand unregistered cars whose damages are of millions of euros to both insurance companies and the state budget.
There are about 110 thousand unregistered works. These damages to industry are like bomb-mine countries. The damage these cars cause in accidents is to pay all insurance companies through the compensation fund under the Kosovo Bureau of Insurance. There are 2.5m to 3.7m euros each year that the Bureau pays damages to these unregistered and unsured vehicles, which are additional burdens to insurance companies”, Mazreku said.
For the director of the Kosovo Insurance Association, this number of unregistered cars is disturbing, because losses for the state bring up to 5m euros annually, while 44m euros are paid off by companies.
This number is certainly disturbing because from 2001 to 2018 some 44m euros have been paid damages to these vehicles, while the loss to the state is over 5m euros”, Mazreku said.
The one from which you suggested that the Kosovo Insurance Association has asked the Ministry of Internal Affairs to become the cleanup of the base date, so becoming the erasing of unregistered cars over two years.
We as an association since last year have asked MPB to extract a guide to clear databases. This means that vehicles that are more than two years unregistered can be seen to hide from the system in legal form or to inform citizens of them unregistering cars and then we as the association in co-operation with the Kosovo Police to focus our campaignes on those cities where there is the largest number of unregistered cars”, he said.
Over 300 thousand traffic sentences
Meanwhile, Kosovo police show that the accident figures for 2019 are quite high.
This year's 66 major accidents have taken place, where 76 people have lost their lives and 45,000 and 443 people have been injured.
For the January-September period, 321 thousand 690 traffic tickets have been declared.
In most cases, according to the police, the blame is the human factor and overstepping the speed allowed for driving.
We remember that according to Internal Affairs Ministry data, long ago given to Facts, in Kosovo there are about 1120 species of registered cars, of which the 10 favorite brands of Kosovars are: VW, Opel, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Ford, Renault, Peugeot, Fiat, FALSE and Daimler Benz.
Restricting the import of older cars up to ten years went into effect on January 1st 2018, with the argument that a large number of old cars are being imported to Kosovo, causing problems both in communications and in environmental pollution.
