The eyes are said to be the window of the soul. But they can also be a window to the heart and help predict the danger of heart attacks and strokes
Small blood vessels in the back of the eye are actually affected by arterial rigidity and increased blood pressure, according to a study published in the magazine”Hypertension” of the American Heart Association.
Some 55,000 middle and third - aged people participated in the study.
The team had access to 3.5 million blood vessels as well as a automated program that examined their digital images by providing measurements of each other's blood vessels.
The analysis found that a greater curve of the retinal arteries was accompanied by greater arterial rigidity and greater systolic pressure (value at the time of the heart contracting).
This effect on the retina has no impact on vision, but it could potentially tell us very quickly whether the person is more likely to diagnose cardiovascular disease”, explains researcher Alicja Rudnicka.
“If what happens on the rest of the body is reflected in what happens in the back of the eye then the evaluation of retinal morfology should be included in clinical practice among cardiovascular risk factors such as age, cholesterol levels and pressure, the authors stressed.
