The new research by Japanese researchers shows that iron injections can cause an almost immediate strain of blood vessels.
As the iron level in the bloodstream increases, so does the risk of heart and brain attack.
Scientists believe that the damage caused by excess iron may be the first step in a series of events leading to the exchange and strengthening of arteries known as arteroclerosis.
Our background indicates that iron should be known as a risk factor,” says Dr. Hidehiro Macoca, lead researcher and head of Hypertension Program at Kurum University Medicine School.
Numerous studies indicate that there is a link between iron levels and blood vessels. Those suffering from very high iron levels in their blood are believed to have greater risk of heart problems.
The Japanese study is clearly the first to show that increasing iron consumption has a negative effect on the human body, most precisely on the mucosa of blood vessels, or endolin. This study included 10 healthy young people to whom iron overdoses were given.
Researchers used high - resolution ultrasound to measure any impact on the bloodstream. What they found was that expanding blood vessels had been reduced for a third during the study.
It is not clear what causes change, but it may be that iron can produce radically without oxygen associated with both cancer and heart disease.
Women are far less likely to suffer from heart disease because of the loss of a certain amount of iron during menstruation. People who donate blood also regularly lower their iron level during the process and may be less inclined for heart attacks.
Shorting iron is not a major problem, but if taken for an extended period of time, it can reduce the ability of blood vessels to transport blood and thus endanger the entire body.
