If there is much reason to sleep on the open door from being able to hear your child cry or thieves, it is really very dangerous not to close them overnight.
This may seem harmless at the moment, but the American Institute of Fire Protection (FSRI) states that in case of fire, a closed door will be the only obstacle against fire, smoke and deadly carbon monoxide.
40 years ago, the average time to escape a house fire was about 17 minutes. But since most of the furniture today is made from flammable materials, people have only three minutes to save their heads alive, according to FSRI.
In an effort to show this problem, F SRI did a demonstration to show how closing a door can save lives. They lit a room where one door of the room was locked and the other opened.
At the conclusion of the experiment, it was clear that those who shut the door to the bedroom had a better chance of surviving fire.
FSRI also shared some helpful advice on how to handle a fire if your home is affected.
“Always keep fire alarms, a home rescue plan, and close your room door”, the Institute advises.
