We're sanctioning the Ministry of Communications on the Internet, including message applications, which have helped tens of millions of Iranians remain in relation to each other”, said US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchi.
Protests in Iran erupted on November 15th after the price of oil rose by about 200 percent.
Officials confirmed five deaths in the protests, but human rights organisation Amnesty International said that more than 100 protesters were believed to have been killed, as authorities have used live ammunition against them.
The American Treasury said Azariah Jahrom is a former intelligence ministry official in Iran who increased Internet censorship since he became a minister two years ago.
Internet services in Iran have been mostly blocked Friday, for the sixth day in a row.
Sanctions will freeze all financial assets and properties Azariah Jahrom has in the US.
