Volkswagen's supervisory board (VW) will meet this week to decide whether to continue with a planned investment in Turkey or build a new facility somewhere in Europe, writes German Automotive News magazine.
The company could decide to set the Passat model in Slovakia instead of Turkey, according to a source quoting company sources.
Up to such a step comes due to the company's concerns as a result of international criticism of a military operation launched by Turkey in Syria.
Volkswagen plans to launch a new factory until October 2022, when operations in the German town of Emden, where Pasat is currently produced, will be directed to electric vehicles.
One option under consideration is to shift the Passat production to a factory in Bratislava. Volkswagen Touareg, Audi Q7, VW Up, Seat Mii and Skoda Citigo are already being produced there.
Slovakia is the country with the largest number of vehicles produced per capita, and employs about 300,000 people.
Volkswagen's original plan envisioned the construction of a factory in Manisa, 40km northeast of Izmir, on Turkey's western coast,
