According to local police, for the past nine years, Jan Zon van Dorsten has lived in a house in Ruinerwold, 90 km north of Amsterdam, until he appeared at a bar Sunday, ordered five beers and said he could not return home.
Soon the owner of the bar was summoned by police who went to the remote area where his house was located.
They found Jan's four sisters, between 18 and 25 years old, his father and another male in the basement. The family was sent to a safe place, while Austrian Joseph B, 58, was taken into custody, according to the Daily Mail.

Investigators have admitted that they still have no answers to the key questions surrounding the case as is whether family members were staying in the basement against their will and what exactly was their relationship with Joseph B.
The mystery is added by the fact that Jan, the eldest son, has had access to social networks and has been active on Facebook since June of this year. His profile shows regular postings until 2010, when he announced that he had moved to Ruinerwold, the village where his home is located.
Then he wrote nothing until June of this year, when he suddenly reactivated and wrote that he was working as director of an online store in Creconat, located in Meppel, a village about six miles [6 km] from Ruinerwold.

On Saturday, he posted three photos of monuments around Ruinerwold, which were taken in darkness. Investigators believe he recorded them as he headed for the bar.
Local media described Joseph B. as a “marangoz” and “man for all works” which had his workshop in Meppel. They announced that he was born in Vienna and that he came to the Netherlands in 2010, the same year that his family was confined to the basement. This information was not confirmed by Austrian authorities.
Austria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Joseph B. had not requested contact with the embassy and had refused their help.

A man named Tonne, who had a worker near Joseph, told the Dutch portal AD that Joseph was a very skilled carpenter.
“He did his job in a brilliant way”, he said.
Alida ten Over, the owner of the house where Joseph stayed, said that he always paid the rent on time and never saw signs that other people besides him lived in the house.
His neighbours told RTV Drente that Joseph had pulled over and that he was not allowing visitors to enter the house. The house itself was located some 180m from the nearest road and 90m from the nearest neighboring property.
According to Dutch radio, the man, along with his six children, aged 16-25, lived in solitary confinement in the basement of a farm in Ruinerwold, where they waited for the end of the world.
The owner of a nearby club told local media that he briefed police Monday after being contacted by a confused young man, telling him he had not been out for nine years.
He said he was gone and needed help,” he said.
What condition or conditions they lived under are unknown. The location of the mother of children is also unknown. They had a large garden of vegetables and goats, thanks to which they survived for years.
