A long-lossed painting by a famous Italian artist found hanging in the kitchen of an elderly French woman has been auctioned for 24 million, setting a new record, writes BBC, broadcast Periscope. Italian artist Cimabue's painting was discovered last month [...]
Italian artist Cimabue's painting was discovered last month in northern France. The painting was expected to take up to $6 million at auction. But the winning bid far exceeded expectations, with the painting coming down four times.
Acteon Action House said the amount paid by an anonymous buyer from northern France was a new world record for a medieval painting sold at auction.
“When a unique work of a painter as rare as Cimabue comes to the market, you should be ready for surprises”, the Dominique Le Coent auction for Reuters news agency said.
For years the painting hung on a hearth in a kitchen in the city of Compiègne. It was noticed by an auction, which advised its owner to assess it by experts.
The owner believed that it was an old religious icon of little value. Tests were performed in the artistic work using infrared light to determine similarities with the works of Italian painter Cimaboe, also known as Cenni di Pepo. Born in the city of Florence, he was active at the end of the XIII and the beginning of the XIV century a passing figure between medievally stylized art and Renaissance's most naturalistic works./Periscopi/
