Robert Anthony De Niro Jr. was born on August 17, 1943, in New York. His parents were respected artists. His mother Virginia Admiral was a talented painter who graduated from Berkeley and became a respected name on the art scene in New York in 1940 and 1950, and his father Robert De Niro was a painter, sculptor, and poet that critics worshipped.
They were known as the golden couple in the New York arts circle but were divorced in 1945 when De Niro was only two years old. He spent most of his childhood with his mother, who did different jobs to feed him and to give him access to the study.
As a 10-year-old, De Niro made his debut as a lion in Oz's Wizard. He was soon accepted into the prestigious School of Music and Art in New York, but as he later admitted, he could never enter the competitive atmosphere prevalent there, which led him to decide to enroll in public school after just a few days.
But it didn't last long. Realizing that school wasn't something he was interested in, then as a teenager turned to the dark side and joined the Italian street band, which he called Bobby Milk, because of his lighty way.
Although he did not spend much time with them, since he simply was not the type of character, it was his life with the gang that helped him enjoy the roles of Italian mobs years later and became famous.
