All mothers who are used to “to save” from their children by giving Smartphones into their hands, now they must really worry and be careful
Smartphone or tablet is one of the best sedatives for children, but next time you have to think twice before you give your child one of these devices.
According to some new studies published in Scientific Reports, daily use of sensitive screen equipment can have serious effects on children's sleep.
Researchers found that every hour a child spends on an electronic device may result in approximately 15 minutes of sleep loss per day, and the result is very alarming for children up to three years of age, since sleep can greatly affect their development.
A surprise discovery was that although children were sleeping more on average during the day, up to 3 years of age, spending more time on the touch screen, they still spent less general time in sleep”, said Celeste Cheung, coauthor of the study, according to Real Simple.
Cheung works as a researcher at London's Birkbeck University, where the study has been carried out. “As a result, they fail to be satisfied with sleep during the day”.
The study, which collected information from 715 parents, focused on the frequency of using touch - display devices during the day to children from 6 to 36 months. Parents conducted an online survey reporting sleep and the use of equipment by their children.
Later, researchers analyzed the data, checking gender, age, mother's educational level, and watching television. The results were impressive. Approximately 92 percent of children between 25 and 36 months used a digital screen each day, and on average, children used equipment about 25 minutes a day.
A possible scientific explanation how touch-screen devices damage sleep? Blue light coming out of the screens can stop the production of melantonin, the hormone that has to do with fixing sleep rates.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children under 1.5, talk for years now, they should not spend any time in front of the screen, while children from 2 to 5 should not spend more than an hour a day.
However, there is more than just bad news. The study has also found that children who actively used screens, slipping their fingers and playing games developed hand coordinates, fingers and eyes faster than children who did not use screens.
Of course, nothing can be said with certainty at this stage, but, as Cheung says, parents should not be concerned, but be attentive to the potential impact of sensitive screen equipment, as positive and negative”.
