He has been lying in hospital since December because he suffered from a disease that has not been made public and had financial problems.
Masinga played for Leeds between 1994 and 1996, as well as for St Gallen in Switzerland and Italian clubs Salerniana and Bar, the newspaper Express broadcast.
A sad day for South African football”, South African Football Federation President Danny Jordan said.
“A loyal football servant, in the field and outside of it”, he added.
He scored 18 goals in 58 matches for South Africa, but the goal towards Congo is most remembered because he provided South Africa with the first qualifications at the 1998 World Cup.
