The Associated Press news agency reported that Pompeo has talked to the Turkish Foreign Minister and says a possible deal is being negotiated.
Pompeo said reaching a consensus would enable Turkey to defend itself and, meanwhile, leave Kurds who pose no threat to him.
Pompeo is also optimistic that Kurds who fought alongside American forces against the Islamic State in Syria will not be abandoned.
Turkey considers many of Syria's Kurdish groups terrorists and has pledged to attack.
These threats have increased as the United States has begun withdrawing from Syria, given President Donald Trump's orders
