Romania assumed the European Union's rotating presidency on Tuesday.
Its six-month role began with the motto “Unity ʹ common European value”.
It is the first time Romania will lead the bloc.
In an interview for the German newspaper Die Wellt, on December 29th, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has said that the government in Bucharest has not fully understood what it means to head EU countries”.
“Role requires willingness to listen to others and ready to place its concerns in the background”, Juncker said.
Romania and the EU have disagreed on a proposed overhaul of the Romanian judiciary, which the EU thinks is influenced by politics and will undermine the fight against corruption.
Key moments of the Romanian presidency in the EU will be the planned removal of Great Britain from the bloc on 29 March and the European Parliament elections in May.
