The Italian state will provide financial support of up to 780 euros a month for every person living by rent and without resources. 150 euros of this amount must be used to pay rent or credit.
The aid is part of the reform package the Italian government has recently adopted in terms of social welfare. After that decision, critics say the measures are unstable for the country's financial situation.
Reforms in the pension system were election promises of the movement of Five Stars and the far-right League party. The prime minister, Giuseppe Cute, expressed pride in keeping his campaign promise.
The package must now be approved by parliament within two months. It provides financial support for the poor and allows citizens to retire earlier.
The Five Star Movement has repeatedly called for the adoption of such a bailout package.
“This reform will improve the quality of life for 5 million troubled Italians,” said party leader Louis Di Maio, while pledging to establish a new social welfare state in Italy.
The package is expected to cost the government 7 billion euros. Individuals with savings of over 6,000 euros will not benefit from the scheme.
