The former Israeli minister, Gonnen Segev, is expected to be sentenced to 11 years in prison after accepting the work of spying on behalf of the rival state, Iran. The news has revealed the Ministry of Justice in Israel. Segev had served as energy minister in the nine years.
Before being arrested by authorities, he had worked as a physician in Nigeria. Segev is accused of uncovering data for Israeli officials and various security bases. He had been arrested in Ecuatorial Guinea in May last year, while then extradited to Israel. The former minister acknowledged the criminal act of serious spying as part of an agreement with prosecutors on easing the sentence.
The formal decision on his sentence will be made during the final court hearing in the case, which is scheduled to be held on 11 February. On the other hand, Iranian authorities have not commented on the former minister's sentence. Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, Iranian leaders have been calling for Israel's disappearance. They say that Israel has no right to exist as a state because it is conquered by Muslim land.
In 2005, Segev was sentenced to five years in prison because of the attempted trafficking of 30 thousand pills from the Netherlands to Israel using a diplomatic passport with the deadline. He had received a doctor's license, but then he was allowed to exercise his profession in Nigeria, writes “BBC”
