Intellectual values in Europe have been facing a challenge that has not been seen since the 1930s”, some of the most prominent intellectuals from 21 countries of the world, including great Albanian writer Ismail Kadare, as Britain is heading towards meeting Brex and nationalists appear to get many votes in the upcoming European Parliament elections.
It's a group of 30 writers, historians and Nobel Prize winners. They have signed a manifesto, published in many newspapers, including the “The Guardian”, where they raise the alarm that Europe's idea is being dissolved in front of their eyes.
We need to act now, or Europe will disappear under the waves of populism”, the scripture says. “We need to restore political volunteerism, or accept that we will be surrounded by hatred and grim passions following”.
They write that it is a shame that Europe was abandoned by the island across the Canal, referring to Brex, who has brought the EU's relationship with England to the lowest point in post-World War II history.
Intellectuals estimate that “if efforts are not undertaken to fight populism, the EU elections will be the worst the EU has seen; victory for the destroyers; shame for those who still believe in the legacy of Erasmus, Dantes, Gethsemane and Comenius. A contempt of intelligence and culture; explosion of xenophobia and anti-Semiticism; a catastrophe”.
Writer Salman Rushdie told “The Guardian”: “Europe is experiencing today the greatest risk of the last 70 years. If there are people who believe in the idea of Europe, they should get up now. I hope the British Parliament finds courage to seek a second referendum. This would save the country from the Brex disaster, thus saving the EU”.
Ian McEwan said he signed the manifesto because the current situation made him very pessimistic. But he hoped that the world spirit “Zeitgesit” would be restored.
Orhan Pamuk said Europe's idea was important even to non-Westerns: the idea of Europe, freedom, women's rights, democracy and equality is difficult for me to defend my part of the world”, he said. “Europe's historical success has made it easier to protect these ideas and values, which are essential to mankind in every part of the globe. There is no Europe beyond these values, except for Europe's tourism and business. The idea of Europe is under threat”.
“Europe has been abandoned from across the Atlantic Canal, by the two biggest allies who in the past have saved the continent twice from suicide; left it vulnerable to increasingly exposed manipulations by their designer in the Kremlin. Europe, as an idea, the will and what it represents, is being dissolved before our eyes”, says the text, conveys the TCH.
