This comes after Ambassador McCallum's controversial remarks to an extradition case involving a senior executive telecommunications official, China's Huawei.
Prime Minister Trudeau said a statement has asked McCallum to step down, but has offered no further reasons.
The ban on high official Meng Yanzhou, at the request of the United States, had irritated China and shaken its reports with Canada.
Meng is charged with sanctions on Iran by the United States. The charges were denied by Huawei Company.
Trudeau thanked China's ambassador for the service he has offered over the years in Canada.
McCallum had caused controversy Tuesday, when he publicly rejected the US request to extradite Miss Meng.
The following day, he said he's been misinterpreted and his comments have created confusion.
