Russia must not exploit British citizens like “chess”, said British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, following the arrest of a former American businessman, who also has British citizenship.
Hunt said it is an extremely concerned “for Paul Whelan, who has been arrested by Russian authorities on spying charges.
He said 48-year-old is being given “any support”.
Whelan's reputation has said he has gone to Russia to attend a wedding, while the Federal Security Service in Russia said on December 31st that he was caught spying on Moscow.
There are reports that Whelan also owns Ireland's passport.
Whelan could face 10 to 20 years in prison if he is tried in Russia and found guilty of spying.
