Such vehicles have only been used north of Kosovo over the past 20 years, and are estimated to be around 30% of the total number of vehicles.
Police Operations Directorate in the north region chief Zelko Boyic confirmed to Radio Free Europe that police, since Monday morning, are controlling all vehicles and that so far none have confiscated, as citizens, as he said, are respecting the police decision.
“We are very grateful to our fellow citizens, who have shown understanding and discipline, as these tools have not yet been seen in traffic (now). Hopefully it will remain so”, Bojic said.
The leadership of municipalities in northern Kosovo, northern Mitrovica, Zvecan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq respectively, issued a joint statement through which he said he fully supports the police's decision to the north to stop using vehicles that have no license plates and no security policy.
