Former swimming champion Roxana Maracineanu has been named Sport Minister in France, instead of outgoing Minister Laura Fletsel.
Maracineanu, 43, is the daughter of Romanian political refugees in France. Maracineanu was world swimming champion 200m in the 1998 World Cup in Perth, Australia.
Maracineanu also has political experience, in particular that of the adviser to the Ile-de-French region, in Paris.
Last July, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe had made a request to follow a mission of the Ministry of Education to fight against the numerous drownings of tourists at sea and in swimming pools.
Roxana, the daughter of Romanian refugees, has been quoted, among other things, as an example of integration.
