Kosovo Deputy Prime Minister Enver Hoxhaj has said the Russian Federation is not interested in reaching compromise between Kosovo and Serbia, but that its interest is to reach its compromises outside the Balkans. In an interview for Der Standard, Deputy Prime Minister Hoxhaj said Kosovo and Serbia are only in the first phase of the final phase of dialogue. He said Kosovo is interested in reaching an agreement that paves the way for the country's membership in the United Nations.
This agreement must be signed in Brussels, ratified in the two parliaments and adapted to the Security Council”, Deputy Prime Minister Hoxhaj said.
He has insisted that Kosovo will remain a multiethnic state and will always exist. He said the agreement with Serbia needs Kosovo only if it is assured of UN membership.
It is especially important to consider how much such an agreement can be implemented by the European Union and the United Nations”, the former chief of Kosovo diplomacy said.
Hoxhaj said Ahtisaari's package has failed to implement on two levels.
“Initially, the immediate deterioration of parallel structures in the country's north has failed; and secondly, Kosovo has not been membered in the United Nations. And to be honest, we don't have much trust in the European Union since they haven't yet managed to convince five of their own countries to recognise Kosovo, the decade we left behind. So why should we trust the EU if they hold such a position against us”, he has declared for Der Standard.
As for Russia, he has no interest in compromise between Kosovo and Serbia, but wants to use the same to achieve his compromises outside the Balkans. However, Hoxhaj said it is early to talk about an outcome of the negotiations.
