US Defence Secretary James Mattis warned that next weekend he will visit Macedonia to express clear support for the upcoming referendum on the name issue, but also sorrow over Moscow's possible evolution in the process.
I will go to visit our friends of Macedonia and will clearly suggest that the US supports the people of Macedonia”, Mattis said in a statement to reporters at the Pentagon.
Mattis stressed that he is concerned that Russia could evolve in the referendum process in Macedonia.
If you have a vote, Moscow will be involved. I'm worried about that. Such involvement has been practiced from Estonia to the United States of America, from Ukraine and now Macedonia, always adapts to the concrete situation”, the US Defence Secretary said.
