Albania ranks third in Europe, after Norway and Iceland, for producing electricity from renewable sources, with a percentage of 86 per cent total output in 2016, Eurostat confirms.
Based on official statistics, this level is higher compared to the European Union average (BE), where electricity production from renewable sources contributed to 30 per cent of total electricity consumption during 2016, reports ASTH.
Energy consumption in Albania is based on the production of electricity that depends 100 percent on hydropower plants ( HECs.
Hydro power plants are the most important source of renewable energy in Europe, followed by wind energy and solar energy.
Other renewable sources for power generation include wood, biogas, renewable waste and geothermal energy.
According to Eurostat, in five EU countries, over 50% of the electricity consumed in 2016 was produced by renewable sources; Austria (73%), Sweden (65%), and Portugal and Denmark (54%).
On the other hand, there are four countries where less than 10% of the energy consumed in 2016 came from renewable sources: Malta (6%), Luxembourg and Hungary (both 7%) and Cyprus (9%).
Countries with much of the electricity from renewable sources in 2016 were Norway (104,7%), Iceland (95.3) and Albania (86%).
