Italy's prime minister, Giuseppe Cote, declared the state of emergency for a period of 12 months in the Liguria region in response to the collapse of a bridge in Genova.
He also said he would allocate an additional 5m euros from central funds to donate this region.
The regional government has called for immediate action following the collapse of the bridge, where 39 people, including two Albanians, remained dead.
More than 400 people have been evacuated from the area, while 15 people are being treated in hospital, 9 of them in critical condition.
Rescue teams already have little hope of finding survivors under the ruins of the “Mandi” bridge, where almost 40 vehicles fell from a height of 45m, following the collapse of part of the bridge.
The cause of the bridge's collapse has not yet been disclosed, but local debates have flared up over road safety conditions, or even other bridges in the country.
Anger is also intense with the construction company of the collapsed bridge. Authorities have launched investigations into possible murders by negligence, while two days of mourning have been declared in the city after the tragedy. /Top Channel
