Russia will hold its biggest combat maneuvers in nearly four decades next month, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said today.
Chinese and Mongol forces will also take part in the maneuver.
Codenamed maneuvers, Vostok-2018, will include about 300,000 troops, over 1,000 military aircraft, two of the Russian naval fleets and all its air units, Minister Shoigu said in a statement.
Manufacturing takes place at a time when tensions between the West and Russia have increased, which is concerned about what it calls an unjustified NATO military reinforcement on its western side.
NATO says it has increased its forces in Eastern Europe to prevent a possible Russian military action after annexing Moscow's Crime and supporting a pro-Russian rebellion in eastern Ukraine.
China and Russia have already participated in joint military exercises, but not on such a large scale.
A spokesman NATO said Russia had informed the Alliance about the maneuvers and that NATO will observe them. / VoA
