The charges against 69-year-olds were formally made in police Monday by a 22-year-old French actress.
Depardieu is one of France's most famous actors and has played in films like "Cyrano de Bergerac" and "Jean de Florette."
What's the actor being accused of?
The alleged crimes occurred this month in one of the Paris residences of Depardie, French media reported.
The unidentified actress made her statement to the police station in Lambesc, southern France, as well as the case was passed to the capital prosecutor.
The actress was reportedly destroyed by alleged attacks.
Depardie's lawyer, Hervé Temime, said he is convinced that his client would be acquitted of any charges at the end of the investigation.
“I have had a long meeting with Gérard Depardieu and I am absolutely convinced that his innocence will be established”, he told Radio France Info. /Periscopi/
