An American judge has ruled that the charge of sexual trafficking by a British woman against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein can be prosecuted, turning this into a historic case, writes The Guardian.
British actress Kadian Noble indicted Weinstein at a court in New York in November, claiming he sent the actress to a hotel room in France and sexually violated him. Her lawyers in New York have argued that since Weinstein promised Noble a role in a movie prior to the 2014 attack, he should be held responsible for the damage due to the law against human trafficking, which makes it illegal to impose someone on sex in exchange for something valuable.
Weinstein tried to depreciate the charge, with his lawyers arguing there was no money involved and nothing of monetary value was exchanged, and the charge could not be described as sexual trafficking.
