Puerto Rico has been struggling to repair its infrastructure and power grid since the storm, and is looking for US Congress 139 billion dollars in recovery funds.
“I am giving an order to renew the official death rate at 2,975”, Governor Ricardo Rossello said at a press conference Tuesday. “Although this is an assessment, it has a scientific basis”, the show.
In a statement, the White House said the federal government backed the governor's efforts for “secured a full responsibility and transparency of victims” in last year's storm.
President Donald Trump was criticised for praising the federal response to the island destroyed in the storm in the weeks following the storm. Critics accused him of showing more concern for residents of Texas and Florida after being hit by hurricanes.
