As funerals for the victims began Saturday at noon, the second act of tragedy continues, with firefighters entering every house to find out if there are other victims or legal doctors proceeding with DNA identification of victims.
Giannis Markis, head of rescue operation, says: “It is impossible to describe what we see, there are no words. We bring older people with limited abilities, breathing problems, children, burns people and bodies of the dead”.
The Citizen's Defence Minister, in an interview on state television, has reiterated that what is possible for firefighters and the military, but in these extreme weather conditions, it was impossible to evacuate so many people to the area where fires broke out.
Hours after Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras himself claimed political responsibility for this tragedy, the first resignations by two vice-presidents of Marathon City Hall have also begun.
I want to take the political responsibility of tragedy before the ministerial cabinet and the Greek people. I consider such an understanding to the country's prime minister and I invite you all to do this”, Tsipras said.
Even the Greek opposition has already taken on a wave of criticism against the government, which in turn awaits the conclusions of a broad investigation, stressing that it is a deliberate and well-organised fire.
Meanwhile, when about 1,000 buildings controlled by fire are considered uninhabitable, according to the latest published data, 52% of houses in this area are without construction permits.
