The archbishop of Adelaide, Philip Wilson, was sentenced in May after covering abuses by a pedophile priest, but has resisted calls to resign. Wilson has said he will appeal the verdict.
Turnbull said: “it's time for the Pope himself to download it”.
Two weeks after Wilson was sentenced to custody, the prime minister said that the Church's top “authority must now intervene.
There are many leaders who have called on him [ Wilson] to resign. He must resign,” he told reporters in Sydney.
Throughout his trial, Wilson denied knowing about the abuse of boys by priest James Patrick Fletcher in New South Wales in the '70s. But one judge said Wilson had kept silent in an attempt to protect the church's reputation.
