Iran faces increased US pressure and severe sanctions following Trump's decision to withdraw the United States from an international agreement for 2015 over Iran's nuclear programme.
Addressing a meeting of Iranian diplomats, Rouhan said: “Z. Trump, don't play with the lion's tail, it would only lead to regret,” reported Iran's official news agency, IRNA.
“America must know that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace, and the war with Iran is the mother of all wars”, Rouhan said, leaving open the possibility of peace between the two countries that have been at odds since the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
“
Rouhan mocks the Trump threat to stop Iranian oil exports and said Iran has a dominant position in Hormuz Bay and Strait, a major oil pipeline route.
“Whoever understands policy bases does not say we will stop Iran's oil exports we have been guarantor of regional river safety throughout history “, Rouhani said.
Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatolah Ali Khamenei, on Saturday supported Rouhan's suggestion that Iran could block Gulf oil exports if its exports stop itself.
Rouhan's apparent threat earlier this month to obstruct oil deliveries from neighbouring countries came in response to Washington's efforts to force all countries to stop buying Iranian oil.
Iranian officials in the past have threatened to block Hormuz's plight in retaliation for any hostile act of the US. Especially, a senior Iranian military commander warned that the Trump government could prepare to invade Iran.
Iran's oil exports could drop by up to two thirds by the end of the year due to new US sanctions, putting oil markets on a major strain amid supply cuts elsewhere.
Washington had originally planned to completely close Iran from world oil markets after Trump abandoned the deal restricting Iran's nuclear ambitions, urging all other countries to stop buying crude oil by November.
But it has somewhat eased its stance since then, saying it may give up sanctions for some allies who are particularly dependent on Iranian supplies.
