Images from a May protest in Paris start with a man in a black jacket, with a gray hood and a police helmet pushing a woman on the road, his hand shakes the back of her neck.
The camera moves to a group of police officers, pulling a new one onto the street. Another man in civilian clothing is striking down the protester, who is kneeling down. Then the first person in the black jacket approaches the man on his knees, grabs him off his neck, and drags him away from the group.
Then he beats it. The video, which circulated in social media, was recorded at a Workers' Day protest in May.
This week, French newspaper “Le Monde” identified the black jacket man as Alexander Benalla, a security assistant to French President Emmanuel Macron.
This raised a number of media questions in France: What did Benalla do in protest, why did he beat the protesters, and did his superiors know of this behavior?
Then France's president, Emmanuel Macron, ordered changes in staff following the release of a video showing his assistant now dismissed by beating a protestor.
