European Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn has given a long interview for Pan-European media EurActiv, where he has talked mainly about the Western Balkans. It requires that the Balkan strategy be viewed realistically and there be no expansion as in 2004 when many states were admitted.
Hahn is clear: “Even when the European perspective remains open for the entire region, there will be no membership in En-Bloc“.
In the question of which Balkan state has carried out major reforms over the past year, Hahn is at no time spared: “Macedonia, which passed from the political crisis on the democratic road. Zoran Zaev's new pro-European government has improved reports with neighbours, and particularly resolving long-term name dispute with Greece. ”
According to Hahn, other countries have carried out reforms and advances on the Euro-Atlantic road, including Kosovo, which has just received the recommendation for visa liberalisation with the EU.
The Western Balkans are surrounded by EU countries, belong to Europe geographically, historically and culturally. ”
Finally, Hahn also mentioned Turkey, which, as opposed to the Western Balkans, has been significantly removed from European values and that “currently” has been suspended for opening other chapters.
