European Union Commissioner for Neighborship and Enlargement Negotia Johannes Hahn called on the bloc to start membership negotiations with Macedonia and Albania, stressing the importance of giving a positive “ ” to the entire Western Balkans region.
His call comes at a time of deep divisions among the 28 EU member states to open negotiations with Albania and Macedonia.
These two countries hope EU foreign ministers will give the green light at today's summit in Luxembourg, but European officials are quoted as saying France and the Netherlands could set additional conditions.
“I think that all should be aware of how important it is to give a positive signal to the region”, said Commissioner Hahn.
On Monday, even EU foreign policy chief Federica Moghrini said she expects EU foreign ministers to accept the European Commission's recommendations to start membership negotiations with Albania and Macedonia.
In addition to Macedonia and Albania, four other Balkan countries remain outside the EU: Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
