The foreign ministers of Macedonia and Greece, Nikola Dimitrov and Nikos Kotzias, have signed the historic agreement for the new Macedonian state name today.
International representatives like Federica Moghrini, Johannes Hahn, Antonio Gutierrez also attended the signing ceremony.
With the new agreement Macedonia will now be called “Republic of Northern Macedonia”.
This agreement was signed after a long period of problems between the two states.
It was Greece that for more than 20 years has hampered Macedonia in terms of its name.
According to Greeks named Macedonia, Skopje would have claims on Greece's northern region, namely Macedonia.
The other side, therefore, says the Macedonian state has no territorial background but that it is an accidental solution.
With the signing of this happy agreement, the prime ministers of the two countries -- Zaev and Tsipras -- were expressed.
Greek Prime Minister Alexis Cipras has praised the agreement as very important for the future of both countries.
This is a patriotic agreement between two peoples. With this resolution, a multi-year-old dispute strengthens confidence between the two countries and the peoples ... The agreement will also open a new page in economic development between the two states. We want to take a step to forget the wounds of the past, not only for our countries but for Europe to move forward for a better future. This deal will build the foundations of a new era. Zaev and I decided to overcome the difficulties. I want to thank the UN and Nimic that 25 lines tried to settle this issue. It couldn't happen at a better time, because today it is Nimic's 55x1> birthday, Greece's prime minister, Alexis Cipras, has declared.
While Prime Minister Zoran Zaev has praised the agreement as historic and very important for the European future in his speech.
My feeling today is that with the signing of the agreement we are also moving mountains, today we are ending a conflict, the multi-year-old differences that had built walls between the two states... we have lost a lot, but we, after a lot of efforts, have reached diplomatic agreements on building friendship... past has taught us a lot, we have to learn from the past and not repeat”, Zaev declared.
“We are building the future, the agreement encourages us to trust between the two countries and the best life between our two peoples... we are building friendships with Greece. Ano will be our supporter for the ongoing processes. This agreement will strengthen peace and security not only in our countries, but also wider”, Zaev has declared, stressing that with this agreement citizens will have the best perspective as well as strengthen friendship and security in the region.
