Turkey's top election board has issued an informal list of candidates for the June 24th presidential elections.
According to the list, which objections can be expressed by May 11th, six candidates will participate in the election for the president's post in Turkey, Recep Tayip Erdogan, Muharrem Incre, Meral Akesner, Selattin Demirtas, Temel Karamolaoglu and Dogu Perincek.
In April of this year, parliament adopted a draft law on holding early elections on 24 June aimed at strengthening Turkey's presidential system adopted by the referendum last year.
On April 16th 2017, Turkey held a referendum urging voters to decide on constitutional changes in 18 articles to switch from the parliamentary system to the presidential system.
Under new constitutional changes, presidential and parliamentary elections are held on the same date every five years.
The Nationalist Movement (MHP) party and the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK) are set to enter the June 24th election as an election alliance, Arsh conveys.
The MHP-AK coalition supports incumbent President Erdogan, who wants his second term as president.
Erdogan has held the post of president since 2014 and is the first Turkish president elected by popular vote. Prior to that, he has been prime minister from 2003 to 2014.
The Republican People's Party (CHP) has chosen Muharrem Incre as its presidential candidate for early elections on June 24th.
Meanwhile, the IYI Party (Good) has released a petition to nominated party leader Meral Akesner as their candidate in the June 24th presidential election.
Akesner exceeded 100,000 signatures to be presidential candidates.
Saadet's party declared the chairman, Temel Karamolaoglu, its presidential candidate.
Karamollaoglu also exceeded 100,000 signatures to compete as candidate.
The Democratic Peoples Party (HDP) nominated former imprisoned leader Selahattin Demirtas as the presidential candidate.
In November 2016, Demirtas along with 12 HDP lawmakers were arrested on charges of terrorism. Demirtas remains in custody pending trial.
Dog Perincek, chairman of the Vatan Party, exceeded 100,000 signatures to compete as presidential candidate in the June 24th election.
