We were ready, awaiting nuclear attack”- the confession of British women who served secretly during the Cold War.

For more than 20 years, the green Netherlands in East Yorkshire was serving as the secret location of the Royal British Air Force bunker (RAF), where radars were watching the sky at the time when World War III threatened. During an uncertain period of the Cold War, when the nations [...]

During an unclear period of the Cold War, when nations were poised for devastating images of a possible nuclear war, Britain had established a radar protection program known as “Ror”, which included 70 radar stations located around the coast, writes Periscopi.

One of these stations was the underground bunker located in a small village called Holmpton, known as “Vrima”.

The radar at this station was headed east and also provided images from the Soviet Union, witnessing the activities of gathering and preparing nuclear weapons.

In the event of a nuclear disaster, RAF personnel would be assigned to return order to the region. The workers in the bunker were also responsible to warn of a possible incoming nuclear attack, envisioning direction, speed and radioactivity of the bomb.

Nine women who worked in Holmpton and two other bunkers next to him have shared their memories with Lee Karen Stoa.

Janet Hutt, her sister Barbara Turner, Eileen Mann and Janet Lvesley photographed in the radar operating room at Holmpton, had joined. RAF at the age of 17 and had been working in the bunker between 1959-1974.

As air defense operators, women had interpreted information unexploited by radar screens, writing backwards results on a transparent board so that they could be read on the opposite side. The information would then be on the radar.

In this way, the top officials could see and monitor for an enemy plane.

Janet Hutt says: “I remember the sound of events, like a buzz that we were used to. Every plane posed danger and we were alarmed. If something was presented and we had no information it looked like the black sheep. Aim immediately and get the answer. Usually one or two fighter planes would be taken by local tracks to intercept and send out of our airspace. They usually came from the Soviet Union. It happened often during the Cold War season and kept us standing. ”

She continues her confession: “We were trained for a possible nuclear attack. We knew that if we were within the ray we would not survive. They could call you on duty any part of the day or night, and never know if it was just real training or assault. If it were red range, the buzz would stop immediately. There's never been a panic. We were trained and disciplined. If you obeyed the commands and did your job, everything would be fine. We only took two thirds of a man's salary. We were told that they did so because men could get married and have a family. Nowadays, a break would be given if you were pregnant, whether you're married or you're not, but not even then”

Barbara Turner confessed to the time in Holpton bunkers.

It says: “It's important (that people know about us) because we'd spent all those years working down here and no one had even known, never even learned. The reason was because everything was secret, but it's never been documented that these women have served under the ground for years. ”

Janet Levsley had served five years in Holmpton as an air defense operator, known as <x0komyst”, transferring data coming to the radarboard.

She says: I remember when I had to get down, with iron steps towards the board and the feeling of discomfort because all the men were staring at me. There were also women, but mainly there were men's arena. It was quite dark, with the light on their faces from their computers. I remember once, when I was 18, I was called around 7:00. I was in the kitchen and they came for me. I rushed up the stairs and wore my uniform. My father was working in the kitchen, and at one point he told me it was worth putting on these bricks? Are they bombing us? But it was just an exercise to see how fast we could get there. ” /Periscopi/
