The Internet has radically changed our societies. A major debate has recently been launched, many of the writings translated into the Periscope Opinion section, about the damage that are causing society, democracy, liberal Internet platforms. Of course, the impact is remarkable.
But how many people use the Internet?
In a page called “Internetlivestats”, only 40% of the world's population has Internet access. Over 3 billion of 891 million currently keys to the Internet, writes Periscope.
In 1995, 22 years ago, only 1% of the world's population had access online. The number of users has doubled in 1999 and 2013. The first billion had arrived in 2005, while the second billion had arrived in 2010. The third billion was reached in 2014, while it is expected this year to pass to the fourth billion.
According to continents, more users are in Asia at 48.4%, in two Americas 21.8%, in Europe 19% and in Europe 9.8%.
As far as nations are expected, the first is China with 721 million users, or 52.2% of the general population measured in 2016. Then comes India, with 462 million, and the United States with 286 million. Albania has 1 million of 823 thousand users, while Serbia, within which Kosovo has 4 million and 758 thousand. The smallest number of users have the Marshall Islands with only 10,000 and 709 Sosh.
The smallest percentage of users has the state of Eritrea, with only 1.1% of residents having internet access. Only 56 thousand people have access to 5 million and 351 thousand total. Surprise is Serbia, with a very low rate of 54%. Albania has 69, while Iceland holds the highest percentage with all residents with access.
