In the first quarter of 2018, migration to Switzerland has again marked a decline compared to the same period a year ago. Net migration reached only 13,190, almost 10% less than the first three months of 2017. About two thirds of the permanent foreign population have come from EU states / EFTA
Between January-March 2018, immigration into the permanent population of foreign citizenship has marked a decline of 1.1% compared to the first quarter of 2017 and remained at 33.727. At the same time, the number of migrants rose again (+ 7.0%). Thus, net migration was 13,190 persons (-9.9% compared to the same period in 2017). For EU citizens / EFTA, net migration has been reduced by more than 6%, for 8011 people. Finally, the migration of citizens of third countries has decreased by 14.8%.
Between January and March 2018, 34,103 EU citizens / EFTA emigrated to Switzerland to take over employment, increasing by 3.3% from the first quarter of 2017.
During the same period, 10 188 persons emigrated to Switzerland as part of the family reunion (2.4% compared to the same period 2017). Their 20.7% belonged to the family of a Swiss citizen.
At the end of March 2018, 2,063,428 foreigners lived in Switzerland, of whom 1,412,292 (68,4%) were EU citizens / EFTA and 651,136 citizens of third countries. /Okinfo. ch
