A French citizen employed at France's consulate in Jerusalem has been arrested on suspicion of smuggling weapons to Palestinians.
Since 15 February, Romein Franzk has been charged with displacing 70 pistols and two semiautomatic rifles in Palestinian territories on at least five occasions, said security agency Shin Bet.
According to Reuters, he used the consulate's car to escape Israeli security checks.
Franz “proposed financial benefits, at his initiative and without the knowledge of his superiors”, said the Shin Bet statement.
He is not believed to have had ideological motive, as is support for Palestinian militants, a Shin Bet official told Reuters.
