Special Prosecution in Macedonia has closed case “Sopot”, absent evidence of terrorism charges for 11 residents of the village of Sopot of Kumanovo.
They were sentenced to over 150 years in prison for an explosion that had occurred in their village, located near the border with Serbia. Two Polish soldiers of NATO forces and a civil companion had lost their lives from the explosion of a mine.
Dozens of residents of this village who had been convicted of terrorism had been arrested for this act, but following numerous reactions and new evidence, they have been acquitted.
This has also affected wiretaps published by Macedonia's current prime minister, Zoran Zaev, when he was the opposition leader in 2015.
In one of the published conversations, former Interior Minister Gordana Jankulovska and former secret police chief Sasho Mijalkov had admitted that residents of this village were sentenced in lack of evidence.
